以前看金庸小说，都着重于书内写的“侠”，对“情”字不以为然。射雕三部曲中的情人最终都能在一起，令狐冲、段誉、虚竹、袁承志等人也都找到终身伴侣。其中乔峰可怜，亲手打死自己的爱人。最近读了飞狐外传，认为书中对“情”的设计和描写远胜于其他作品。全书中可以说没有“情”字故事根本发展不了。开始小胡斐对苗人凤的敬仰是因为南兰和田归农的私情，之后胡斐之所以能治好苗人凤的眼睛是因为程灵素对胡斐的爱，为什么胡斐一路坚持要到北京城去，绝大多数除了为了寻找凤南天外，还是为了找圆性。结局更令人体会“借如生死别，安得长苦悲”的凄凉。其实，身为读者，看到袁紫衣原来是出家人是，内心深处一直希望胡斐能回心转意给程灵素一个机会。但感情就是玩人，让胡斐和两个她最终都不能在一起。至于雪山飞狐中的苗若兰和胡斐的故事远远不如程灵素和胡斐的感情了。说到“情”，笔者对飞狐外传还是最喜欢的。

It's not a nightmare as you might think. Instead, it's damn sweet. 2 parts Vodka, 7 parts cranberry juice, 1 part grenadine which I used peach juice as replacement. Anyhow. Anyway, I think Russian Standard Vodka is meant to be drank on the rocks.

Tequila Sunrise

Recently I've been into cocktail making. It's a very exciting experience to learn about different types of cocktails, using different liquor and mixers. But, it also means a lot of $$. Luckily, Tee Hong and CK went Pucket and so I asked them to get hard liquor from duty free shop at Changi airport. Russian Standard Vodka, Jose Cuervo Gold Tequila, Bacardi Gold Rum, Bombay Sapphire Gin. Total $105. Opps. Guess it's worth it because they can last quite long and normally one bottle already costs around $90-100. The killer is Russian Standard Vodka. Although I haven't tried it but people are ranking it as the best vodka online. And Whiplash drinks RSV in Iron Man 2! It's completely unexpected when I noticed it. Anyways, I just tried my Tequila and it taste good! Even better than Screwdriver. I think Tequila goes well with orange juice. Made Tequila Sunrise and I'm currently enjoying my cocktail. Pretty easy, just 5 parts of orange juice, 2 parts of Tequila, and 1 part of optional grenadine or cranberry juice. You can test the proportion to suit your own taste!

Eusoff Hall Dance Production 2010 – My experience

It is certainly true that the more you give, the more you get. I’ve come to realize this after this year’s DP. 4 months of hard work for me as a dancer, many more months for the sets people, producers and the main committee. After all, it’s worth it.

My main regret for this DP is pulling out from Rasul’s dance. Surely I was busy when I made the decision, but if I had been able to persevere and done it, I think I would have felt much more for this DP. Maybe that’s not a good thing after all, cuz I am already having withdrawal symptoms from it. Now if you play me any DP music, especially dance 8 music, I will start dancing. I will feel like shouting “1 2 3 let’s go!!”.

Dance 1, The Dream. I didn’t really know the people in the dance, especially Hsin Yi. I was actually quite scared of her, but after I got to know her, I really think she’s a nice person and a nice choreo. Also because of this dance, I got to know Sam better. And because of her I started the addiction of bubble tea! On the day and the day before DP, I drank 5 cups of bubble tea in total.

Dance 3, The Library Dance. I stupidly quitted it. But I can still remember the experience of the first few practices, which really made me regret quitting it. Rasul and Nicole are fantastic dancers and choreographers. I wouldn’t be shy to say that my favourite choreo of the 8 dances is dance 3. And looking at the final performance, how I wish I were up there dancing.

Dance 8, The Happy Dance. Really, really, really, really LOVE IT. Like… I can just dance to the music whole day until my energy is used up. I’m crazy. Yes, I am. Because I love the dance. Simple blocking, kinda childish steps, but, I LOVE IT. It’s an unexplainable phenomenon. The amount of joy in the music and the dance steps, really makes it difficult for you to pull out from the happiness and get back to reality. I’m addicted.

Special people who made my experience in DP wonderful.

Sam, Pei Zhou, Shenaz, Claire, really one of the few people who talked to me frequently in dance 1, and these people really are the reasons why I stayed in it.

Sarah Tan, didn’t really talk to her much during piecing, practices. But on the last two days, she helped me with make ups and stuff and i found out that she’s really nice, cute, friendly, and good in make up.

Wei Jie, taught me quite a lot during dance 8 practices. Super good dancer and a very fun person. Always doing funny stuff.

Lynette, partner for dance 8! Really really enjoyed dancing with her. There was one time that she crumbled because her left shoulder was very painful, but she stood up immediately the day after. Always reflecting on the imperfections of our moves. And she’s always so cheerful. One great friend made because of DP.

Si En, didn’t know whether to write together with Wei Jie or not, cuz I always tease them as couple. LOL but I promised Si En in the note I wrote to her that I won’t tease her anymore, so I shall not. Back to Si En, didn’t know I could find someone as HAPPY as Ally. Really really see her perpetually smiling. And her smile is that kind that will just make your day so happy. I guess this is why she’s choreographing the happy dance with Ally.

Alison, knew her since year 1. When I first saw her, I really really thought she was beautiful. Like really. Although Jia Wei always say her nose is very big LOL. Danced with her 3 times I think, during Chingay, Rag and DP. And the deepest experience is Rag, cuz I had to do a 360 degree flipping stunt with her. And I was really not confident. But very funny, I remembered she asked me to grip her tight to secure the flip, but I didn’t dare. Then she was like “walao eh you never hug people before one is it!” then gave me a big hug. Really gave me a lot of confidence during the whole Rag dance experience. And like Si En, Ally is really that kind of girl who is perpetually smiling. And her happiness really shows in her choreo.

Cheng Xiang & Tim. A4 guys rocks la! Although the time I get to talk to them is very limited in DP, but simply having them there makes me feel at ease.

Along the way, many many things happened in the preparation of DP. Many people started to lose confidence in it. People did not feel like doing their best for DP because they think that this year’s DP sucks. As a dancer, I hear these things very often. And of course it affected me greatly. But, no matter how screwed up things can be for this year’s DP, no matter how shagged I am, no matter how much I sacrificed for it, I’m glad that I gave my very BEST for DP.

Because,

when you are doing the final pose for dance 8,
when you come out during curtain call and bow,
when you see that the audiences are leaving,
when the curtain closed,
when you do the Eusoff “We” cheer,

you know that it is over.

Eusoff Hall DP 2010 is over, and you can’t do it again, no matter how much you want to. It will only remain as a beautiful chapter in your memory, in your heart.

Indeed, it’s a matter of heart.

NUS Multimedia Viewing Room

Went to library to pick up a chinese book on hold for my term paper. Actually got 2, but only one ready to pick up. The other is due on that day too, but apparently the person haven't return. So I took the book. Recalled that I skipped Friday's ethnography film, so I borrowed the film "To Live with Herds" by David & Judith MacDougall. I got these:

It's a video cassette!! Super old school lah! The film is black and white somemore. So I went straight to the viewing room. And in front of me is this Panasonic video cassette player, and an old Panasonic TV. Man, I haven't used these in such a long time. Remember the old times when you used to record shows on TV for your family members who got work or school? It's those VCR player.

So I went on with my film. It was quite interesting at first, but don't expect me to get entertained through a 70mins B/W film made in 1970s... So from like 20mins onwards I fast forwarded and read the subtitle. Ha. what a slacker I am. But well since the module focuses on the analysis of film but not the anthropology aspect I guess should be fine :P

Then I logged in to my library account, there it is, my second book is ready for pick up, according to the system. So I went to the loan desk, and apparently the system does not communicate to the librarian. It was returned, but not at the loan desk. She told me to go straight to the Chinese library. Made a trip there, the librarian there was nice, told me to borrow the book. Maybe I was in a good mood, so I decided to go back and say thanks to the librarian at the loan desk. Apparently she was damn happy that someone actually say thanks to her.

Okay, so that's the end of my boring day at the NUS multimedia viewing room.

20th Birthday

Now I remember why I did not blog about last year's birthday. It wasn't because nobody celebrated for me, but because I wasn't free to blog during exam period.

Same thing happened to this year's birthday, so this post is dedicated to my brother, my friends who celebrated with me.

They were bad to me. On 21st Nov 12:00am to 4:00am, nothing happened, nobody mentioned a thing to me, except for my dear, Eunice. She gave me this frame of photos with written letters. Really love the present, and think that it's the best birthday present I have ever received in my life. So the next day I woke up, nothing happened either. Timothy walked into my room, saw the photo frame, and told me that "it's nice!", despite the big "happy birthday" written on it. I didn't think much, and thought that he doesn't know.

Dinner time, dear asked me out for dinner. She wasn't gonna tell me where we were going. So off we went. When she told me to alight, I saw my brother, Luke and Erin waiting for me, asking me to complete a "task" to pass the station. I was totally surprised because I seriously thought that everyone forgot. After that we went to eat pizza where almost everybody from the leeyu clique was there. They were telling me they did celebrate for me, just that I don't remember. Surprise surprise surprise. Even though it's during exams, they were all there for me.

When I went back, Timothy came in and wanted to play NBA 2K9 with me. I said okay. Then suddenly every A4 guys sang happy birthday loudly. Coming in was another birthday cake after the one I ate with leeyu clique. It was then I felt that there are many people who care for me. It's just that I have short term memory... Sob...

And my second birthday present for this year is a box of 12 condoms, Okamoto. LOL A4 guys.

Well, I've decided to set the post date to 21st Nov to help me remember it. But I guess I don't need this post to remember, because this birthday will remain in my heart forever.

Firstly, I would like to apologize to my parents. I really really want to go back, but exam is in one week time. The second thing is also my own fault, because I really cannot study when I go home. I just cannot focus when I'm at home. Why? Because I simply have not done that in more than 6 years. My exams starts on 23rd November, now is 14th November, assuming I go home for today, tomorrow, and Monday, that will be 30% of my studying time gone. I am a last minute student, so fault me. My ‘big’ day

Was talking to my brother and mentioned about my birthday. Looking at how people in my clique celebrate birthdays, by right I should seriously kena lotsa shit. But think again, I don’t have any memory on my birthday last year, not at all… Did the Haitian wipe my memory? Highly impossible. Checked my blog archive, no record of any sort. Only found one entry on 24th Nov about exams. Was I that hardworking that I did not celebrate my birthday in any way? Don’t think so. But why do I not remember anything about my birthday last year? Seriously strange.

Honestly, I’m not that close to my clique. Even though I call it my clique, it’s more of a dinner clique. Sometimes I just find myself not on the same frequency as them. But well, as the master Jia Wei has said, “aiya, give and take la”, compromising is important in friendship. Even though at times some people are just screwed up because they don’t compromise, we just have to fit in. That’s the world that we are living in. We are all social beings. Socialization is a part of life, for without it, we wouldn’t be complete. We depend on others to live, regardless of whether they are nice people, or screwed up people. It was not until recently that I realize that fitting in is more important that trying to influence people to think like me.

That might explain why I don’t remember anything about my birthday last year. Was it because they didn’t celebrate with me? Or maybe I went home? I don’t know, cuz I seriously don’t remember anything about it.

Sometimes I wonder, what if parents didn’t send me to Singapore to study when I was 13. Who will I be now? What would I be studying now? What would’ve been my interest now? What kind of music will I like now? How will my singing sound like? What would be my relationship with my brother now? Will I be as independent as I am now? Will I be blogging in English or Chinese now? What would holidays be like without my 4P brothers? Will I even know the study of Sociology? Will I even be aware of the existence of Eusoff Hall?

Guess I wouldn’t be doing anything to do with arts. I will still be interested in basketball. May not like Japanese and Western food as much because I would’ve been eating at home and it will mostly be Chinese food? I would’ve listened to mostly Chinese music. I will still be singing Chinese songs mostly. I might be closer to my brother, or might quarrel more with my brother. I wouldn’t have been as independent as I am now. I would’ve been blogging in Chinese. I would’ve been having holidays with my other groups of friends that I made in Malaysia. And I don’t think I will ever know what Sociology and Eusoff Hall are.

Almost everything in my life would’ve been different if I wasn’t sent to Singapore. Almost nothing will be retained considering i was 13. Will it be for the better? Or for the worse? No one will ever know the answers to these questions. It takes a time machine or Hiro Nakamura’s ability to find out.

Nevertheless, I am satisfied with my life now, mostly. And I did not regret coming to Singapore one bit. Although it wasn’t an easy process, and i think it will never be one, but who said life would be easy? It wasn’t my choice, it was made for me by my parents, but I want to thank my parents for making the right choice for me.

Wake up call

For the last few weeks, I haven't been normal. Seriously. Rushing 4 term papers in 2 weeks really got to me. And after that, took a break by playing a lot.

Guess today's injury on my knee is a wake up call from above. No more basketball already, at least until after exams. Need to buckle up and have discipline.

And the whole relationship thing, it feels kinda weird. Don't know whether it's me or what. I am happy, but at times I don't know what to do. Guess it's because it's new to me. Hopefully everything will turn out right.

But I found a stuck pixel on my screen just today. Was quite pissed because we can only ask for repair if there are 2 or more pixel within a 10cm radius. That's LG's policy. And mine's not even dead pixel, it's a stuck pixel, which means it's blue. Dead pixels are black. Zzz Good thing is it's very very small so it will go unnoticed unless a black background applied. Anyone knows any good ways of fixing a stuck pixel please tell me. I've tried many methods that I saw from online but they are not working.

It's been soooo busy and I didn't even have time to sit down and think about what happened. Now I have, so I shall try to update.

First, rag dance. I must say that it was one of the best experience I had in Eusoff. Most part of it is because it was a competition, not just a performance. So we were really fighting for it. The practices were tiring, time consuming, costumes were uncomfortable, but in the end, it was the process that mattered. We lost the competition, but we didn't lose our friends, and that's the most important part of the whole process. We did it for the raggers, for people like Jun Kit, Raymond, and they won the best float award, so we were proud of them. I cried, because we didn't win the Chancellor Shield, but also because it was ending. It will be an experience that I will never forget. Special thanks to Ali who really helped me in stunts. At first I was like damn afraid but she kept telling me "You can do it!", and so I did (:

Backtrack a bit, orientation. It's not my first time being an OGL as I did it before in NJ. It was good, cuz me and DK really put in the effort and we got good response. Our OG turn up rate was the highest and there were people writing cards to me when I got sick at the end of the orientation. So I'm really happy that I volunteered to be OGL. There were this one girl who cried on the first day saying that nobody talks to her, I'm glad that she's much better now. I remember I asked another girl to talk to her and she said thanks for doing that in her card to me. I actually didn't think it would work but I just did and it actually worked (:

Feel like joining DP. Will see how's my Sem 1 results.

Schooled for a week. Not much, went in for lectures, listened to the lecturer and went for lunch. Sounds pretty boring huh. Guess I need to start reading my materials if I really want to do well.

Choir audition was fun. Going for audition and conducting audition is seriously two totally different things. Now I understand the perspective of the people conducting auditions, and I might just be better next time if I go for auditions!

Audition was fun but choosing people wasn't. It was tiring and difficult. Like really bad to reject a lot of people but no choice. So I left the chose to Handy.

I think we really got quite a lot of good singers with music background this year. As Andrew said, this might just be the year for choir. Yay!!

Freshmen bash was damn fun. Had prebash AKA Cafe Lampa @ A4. Drank quite a lot (for me). Hard liquor, wine, beer, everything was there. So I got really really high after the prebash and was crazy at Butter Factory. Keep dancing around and high5ing people and hugging people. Everyone was also crazy, so this year's bash was seriously much better than last year's one.

Shit man, I realized I really like to drink. Later become alcoholic how?! XD

Moved into my new room yesterday, A417. It's a good feeling, knowing that you have your own room for the rest of the year. The important thing is that I chose this place myself, and it's good. It's cooling, it's secluded. But it's noisy! E block is much quieter. But at night it will be quiet. So it's all good, can study!

Oh yah, I found a free SonicGear speaker in my room! Yay! With subwoofer somemore! Too bad the traffic noise is irritating. I think I need to close my windows when I'm listening to music :(

And my room looks like Singaporean's room! It's super empty! Hopefully I can keep it up so that I won't need to move so much stuff at the end of the year.

Once again, why is it so difficult to come to an agreement when it comes to having a lunch/dinner? Too bad that our tastes are different but why should I always be the one who is sacrificing for others? Not once, that I remember you accommodate for me. Not even once. I don't understand why I'm still going out for dinner with you. Okay, you don't eat beef, so we don't go to Carl's Junior. I don't eat crab and prawn, but we still went for steamboat. I don't see the difference. You say that although there's chicken and fish burger at Carl's Junior, but the chicken and fish burgers are so small that it's not worth it. Hey, I don't eat crab and prawn, why should I go for steamboat? Like what the hell...

And just because some other people have the same taste as you, you win by majority. I lose.

Helping

What is helping? Wiki says this: Helping behavior refers to voluntary actions intended to help the others, with reward regarded or disregarded. It is a type of prosocial behavior (voluntary action intended to help or benefit another individual or group of individuals , such as sharing, comforting, rescuing and helping).

So we know that they are 2 kinds of helping, one purely out of altruism, another expecting rewards in return. Some other types include social exchange theory and prosocial behavior. To summarize, the most reward-free type of helping is altruism.

When you ask someone else to pack food for you, will you choose what you want to eat and make the person walk to buy it for you, or do you simply ask them to pack whatever is convenient for them? According to my value it is the latter. Too bad Lee Yu thinks that the former is okay.

In my opinion, even altruism has its limit. Like when you help someone out of your kindness, if the person take it for granted, you will not help him anymore. Whenever I see Lee Yu helping someone and others are taking advantage of him, I will comment, and this reminds me of Ah Jen's case (hey i bet you will read this). It's like I don't want people to make use of his altruism. Sadly he doesn't seem to like it when I comment on that. Maybe it's the tone I use or otherwise.

Too bad, I will shut up.

Work at Chinese Library

I've officially started working in Chinese Library! The pay is so so but there's air con! That's the most important things nowadays.

My job is basically indexing pdf of some super old Chinese newspaper called 叻报 dated from 1910 to 1933. It's in traditional Chinese and I have to index in simplified Chinese. Because the scans are from old newspaper, close to 20% of the words are illegible, so I have to infer from the content, and guess what, it's 文言文! It's far harder than I imagined. It's like Zzz after a while when you keep reading the same line and you don't get a single thing the author is writing. I guess people in the past really can read 文言文 very well. Oh yah and it was actually published in Singapore. I never imagined Singaporeans can read 文言文.

If you are interested this is one example of the newspaper that I've been reading today 22 Jan 1910 and this is one of the clearer scans already...

There's a mini sculpture of Confucius right in front of my working area, so every time I don't understand a Chinese word I can ask him (AS IF!). Anyway the Confucius sculpture is sort of a motivation for me. I realize I can draw motivation from almost anything if I want to.

I really don't wanna be rude. But some people from my clique are just F**CKING SELFISH. It's never them adjusting to compromise the rest but the rest have to compromise to them. Excuses. Have been reading Dragon Ball recently to catch up with my childhood memories. A conversation between Vegeta & Goku caught my attention.

The past few days have made me go into Chinese mode, so I shall try to blog in Chinese.

有机会帮忙第11届全中辨，作了个不起眼的电脑操纵员。体会到一点，我是一个蛮会苦中作乐的人。纵使我的工作有多无聊，多累人，我还是会用各种方法来让我自己充实。从头到尾，我总共听了十场辩论。从初赛的生活思考题，复赛的国家政策题，到半决赛的情爱哲学题，我都吸收了很多。其中印象最深的莫过于一个起初让我莫名其妙的辨题“女生挑丈夫应该选郭靖/杨过”，本来我真地认为郭靖与杨过真的没法辨，但最后却让我对辩手的论点（多数应该还是教练的功劳吧）刮目相看。最让我头痛的应该是“爱情能/不能做比较”。我觉得爱情不能做比较的原因是因为它是一个抽象的概念，但如果要把一个抽象的概念搬上辩论赛上做一个辩论，就必须把它具体化，在具体化之后，自然就可以比较了啊!所以一直从比赛之前到比赛之后我对这题还是想不通，最后也没有办法得到一个结论。

其中有一个教练让我留下很深的印象，是柔佛古来宽柔分校的教练，虽然名字不记得，但他的大将之风与才识过人让我十分佩服。

全场我最欣赏的辩手是彭亨关丹丹娜布爹中学的林少桦，而我心目中的冠军队是柔佛古来宽柔分校。可惜的是这两队都没法进入总决赛，不然必定更精彩。

这次的全中辨，不只让我从辨题上有所获益，也从整个赛程中看到很多反映人生的情节。人生往往是不完美的，重点是我们要如何从不完美的人生中让自己不断的提升。比赛胜了不代表成功，输了不代表失败，正如我中学华文老师所说的：成绩不重要，重要的是过程。辩论要从两种角度思考才得以全面，所以每样事情一定有正反两面。

我对这次的全中辨的心情可用三个词来形容：不枉，不服，不舍。

在这里，我想用张济作先生的一句话来总结。

合理的是训练
不合理的是磨练

我们走在这个世界就应该用这样的态度去面对人生！

A-Lin, the one who sang 失恋无罪. Saw her in 模范棒棒糖(Don't ask me why I was watching the show). She's got an amazing voice. And I seriously think her live is much better than her recordings. The first time I listened to her performance was on 星光 in 艺人合唱赛, but I didn't really like the songs she sang, though I thought she was really good. Can't really find her live performance on youtube cuz I guess she's not so famous, which really shouldn't be the case. I think she's 阿妹级 voice or even better. And she's become prettier already. Hopefully she'll make it big, cuz I really like her voice.

Haircut

Well, I cut my hair. This time, I changed my fringe.... to a different side. I'm not sure how much I look different with this, but my purpose is to remind myself of a change, in time to come. I'm gonna work hard for Year 2, do my best for everything. So I guess the function is to remind myself of it. Every morning when I wake up and look in the mirror, I can tell myself "Hey dude! Be a different person!" Not in terms of personality but attitudes towards things.

Sidenote: I'm sure if Regina sees my current hair she will be like "YONGYONG! Your hair is short!! Nicer leh! Don't keep long hair le!" LOL I can imagine her saying that, totally.

Kukup trip + Visit Mrs Tay

Had a 4 day 3 night trip with 4P brothers.

First day was totally not productive. Watched Push the movie. Let's just say it's probably one of the worst movie I've seen in my life. So we thought that some LAN games will be better. But first we had some problem with L4D, then we got bored of TitanQuest, finally our ass got kicked by bots in Starcraft. That is the time we realised we needed to move on.

Second day was as spontaneous as us. The original plan was to Kukup, but on the way to Kukup we decided to go to Tanjong Piai first. Our taxi driver became our tour guide. I bet he was happy to be having a day off with us to the Southern most tip of Mainland Asia.

Yay! I was so suprised to find a LAN cable in the hotel room!!

So here I am, blogging in Ho Chi Minh.

From what I can see, Vietnam is a country with vast inequality. The standard of living in large cities are even higher than Malaysia and Singapore but the poor are even poorer. I guess that's what the world is experiencing now, income gap, unequal life chances, class polarization.

Food is good, as usual. I guess I've been staying in Singapore for too long. I'm enjoying the food so much now (:

The internet is ultra slow. So I shall watch Spiderman 3 since it's on TV now :P
